Dnipro at a glance
Dnipro is one of Ukraine’s largest cities: its population was 968,502 on January 1, 2022, placing it fourth nationally, behind Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa. This is a pre-full-scale-invasion estimate, not a verified current headcount.
- Location: East-central Ukraine, on both banks of the Dnipro River. It is the administrative centre of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, upstream from Zaporizhzhia. The map shows its position relative to other major cities.
- Area: Approximately 405 km².
- Identity: A major industrial city, particularly associated with metallurgy, engineering and aerospace manufacturing. It was formerly called Dnipropetrovsk and was renamed Dnipro in 2016.
How it compares
The comparison table uses city-proper populations on January 1, 2022, rather than metropolitan areas, to keep the figures consistent. Ukraine’s official statistical publication provides this pre-invasion reference baseline.
On that basis, Dnipro was:
- About one-third the size of Kyiv and roughly two-thirds the size of Kharkiv.
- Only slightly smaller than Odesa—a difference of about 42,000 people.
- Substantially larger than Lviv and Zaporizhzhia, each with roughly 710,000–720,000 residents.
- Larger than Kryvyi Rih, another major city in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, with about 604,000 residents.
Population caveat: These figures describe the urban hierarchy before Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. Wartime displacement means they should not be read as today’s populations or a confirmed current ranking; I did not verify a newer, consistently comparable city-level series. The official estimates also rely on administrative records rather than a new census.
