From a question to an answer someone else can check

A useful public-data answer is a traceable chain: question, source, query, transformation and limitations.

Turn a broad prompt into a measurable request

“Is this city becoming more expensive?” needs a place, a measure and a time window. Rent levels, house prices and consumer-price indices cover different populations and move differently. Write down the measure you mean before choosing a dataset. If no source can support that measure at the requested geography, narrow the claim rather than silently swapping indicators.

Atlas first looks for a source that can answer the specified subject, place and period. The source registry is a list of candidates, not a promise that every dataset exists for every place. The chosen dataset still needs to be inspected.

Preserve the chain of evidence

Record the publisher, dataset, indicator or table, filters, reference period and retrieval time. If you calculate a rate or change, save the formula and the input values. If you draw a map, record the geographic boundaries and how records were matched to them. These details make a result reproducible and help explain why a later query may differ.

The World Bank metadata API documents where an indicator comes from, how it is measured and how often it is reported. Eurostat describes metadata as necessary for interpreting the content and quality of its statistics. Such notes belong with the answer, not in a forgotten browser tab.

  • Specify the question, geography, dates and unit.
  • Link to the original dataset and retain the exact query or filters.
  • Show every calculation, including denominator and missing-value treatment.
  • State what the data cannot establish, then date the retrieval.

Make the result easy to audit

A source link alone is not enough if a reader cannot find the same series. Put the source and method next to the chart, table or map. A shared snapshot preserves what was seen at the time; a fresh query may legitimately return revised source data. When the two differ, the retrieval date and method give you somewhere concrete to investigate.

Humaps artifacts carry their source, method and caveats alongside the visual result. For an important decision, follow the link back to the publisher and check the original data and release notes.
